The Daily News is a tabloid-style newspaper founded in 1919. It is not related to the earlier New York Daily News, which closed in 1906. It was the first American daily printed in tabloid format and reached its peak circulation in 1947, when it had 2.4 million subscribers. For much of its history the paper was based in Manhattan at 220 East 42nd Street, an Art Deco building designed by Raymond Hood and John Mead Howells. In 1995, the Daily News moved to its current headquarters at 450 West 33rd Street, nicknamed Manhattan West. The original building, now known as the Daily News Building, straddled the tracks into Penn Station and featured a large globe in its lobby. It was later used as the model for the Daily Planet building in Superman movies. Today, the Daily News is owned by MediaNews Group, a division of Hearst Corporation. The company has a number of local newspapers throughout the country, including the Palo Alto Daily News and the San Francisco Chronicle. The paper is the world’s largest daily newspaper publisher and has a presence in television and digital publishing as well. The News also operates a chain of neighborhood newsstands.
