Yale Daily News

The Yale Daily News is a student-run, independent newspaper serving the Yale and New Haven communities. The News has been published every weekday during the academic year since its founding in 1878 and is the nation’s oldest college daily newspaper. The News is financially and editorially independent from the University. In addition to the News itself, the paper publishes WKND, a Friday supplement, and several special issues each year in collaboration with Yale’s various cultural centers and affiliated student groups. These special issues have traditionally included the Yale-Harvard Game Day Issue, the Commencement Issue and the First Year Issue. The News is distributed on a weekly basis and is available in print and online.

The newspaper’s founder, Joseph Medill Patterson, was also the publisher of the New York Post, a rival tabloid founded in 1919. At its peak in the mid-20th century, the Daily News topped the charts of America’s largest newspaper companies with a circulation of nearly 2 million. It eventually lost out to the even more sensational New York Post and by the turn of the 21st century, its once-mighty circulation had been significantly diminished.

In an effort to boost readership, the Daily News began introducing new sections and features in the late 2000s. The newspaper also began publishing celebrity and fashion coverage. In 2017, however, the newspaper’s circulation was continuing to decline and it was announced that Zuckerman had sold the Daily News to Tronc, a Chicago-based media company.

In the wake of a series of scandals in 2022, the Daily News was no longer considered to be one of the most popular newspapers in the United States. The newspaper’s digital audience continued to decline in the years that followed and, according to Comscore, its readers accounted for just 8.8 million monthly unique visitors in the fourth quarter of 2022.
